Bachelors in Education?

Hyman Coren: You can get both. I'm currently working on getting a bachelors in elementary teaching and I will go on to get my special education certification. If you want to do either/or, I would say go with special education. There is ALWAYS a need for more special education teachers in schools.

Leticia Laiben: I think special education has a better job outlook because it's in high demand. Many school districts are having a great difficulty finding special education Teachers. Very little people have the heart for it and very little people have qualification for it. A few weeks back, I was talking to a current special education Teacher who was in the graduate program at Boston. She told me that before she obtained her special education masters two years before obtaining the degree, she told me that she applied for 5 special education positions and got considered for all five positions. She also told me that when she was surfacing for positions at her local school di! strict and many other school districts, she said that at least 14-16 out of 20-22 positions were special education positions. To give you a great example, here's an article:http://www.examiner.com/article/highly-qualified-s...Many school districts are struggling to find qualified special education Teachers. It takes bravery and a heart to take on a field like that. If you want to be a special education teacher, you will still have access to regular education. In the recent times, many school districts are mainstreaming special education students due to the budget cuts. Some special education Teachers work directly with regular education Teachers in a co-teaching setting for students that have IEP's within the general education environment. Think about both directly. I plead my respect for you for wanting to become an educator. You could double major in special education and elementary education. However, some universities offer dual certification programs.
