Coggins and Shots, when does your horse get his/hers?

answers 0:so when do you give your horse a coggins shot? is that just for show horses and when do you give your horses there other shots? like Wormers and anything else your horse takes?( I train horses yes! but I dont give them shots lol I am really bad at all that stuff and want to get into it more! also my vet does all my shots but I want to maybe do them on my own so I want to learn before I tell my vet.)...Show moreanswers 1:The coggins is a blood test which the vet must take because it has to me taken to a lab to do testing for Equine Infectious Anemia. I usually get this done yearly because this is spread by flies so there could always be a chance. If your horse contracts this it must almost always be put down. There is no cure and because flies spread it, many horses could get infected from one horse.I also ! give my shots once a year. Usually I used the FluVac Innovator 6. This gives protection against Tetanus, Rhino, Flu, WEE, EEE, and VEE. I also give the West Nile shot in addition to those. It's really not that hard to learn to drop your own shots. Just ask your vet or look on a credible website to learn.Wormers need to be given more than just spring and summer. This should be done every three months. There is always some way to contract worms. Although risk isn't as high in the fall and winter, there is still possibilities. Also besides vaccinations and wormings, Horses need dental and hoof care. I usually have my farrier out to trim my horses every 8 weeks. This ensures the health of the hoof. The farrier can see any problems, like abscesses, irregular growth (which would be caused by another problem), etc. As far as dental care, I know a lot of people get their horses teeth floated every year. In my case, I go every two years. My horses have a good solid fora! ge diet which helps float their teeth naturally....answers 2:I! only pull a coggins on my horses if they are going to a show. There is no point in doing it otherwise. Shots I do in the spring. Sometimes I have the vet do all of them, and sometimes the vet will just do rabies, and I will do the rest. Some people like to vaccinate twice a year, but I personally only do once a year. My guys get dewormed every other month, rotating the type of wormer. Some shots are:rabies, tetanus, EWV, west nile, rhino, influenza, strangles, and potomac. If you ask your vet he will probably show you how/where to give vaccines. Only the vet can do rabies though....answers 3:We only do Coggins when we are traveling out of state as it is usually a requirement to cross over state lines. We worm on major holidays, that makes it easy to remember. (New Years, Easter,4th of July etc) except for new arrivals. They get it right away and then go on the schedule.West Nile is done late winter before the skeeter hatch and other vacs are on an as need basis. We q! uit doing most other stuff for the horses that don't travel, the ones that do get what may be needed or required for where they are going. We keep tetanus and four ways handy for new arrivals and travelers ,pregnant mares always get rhino We do all our own shots except the Coggins which must be done by a vet because of the lab testing........Get the 50 # mineral blocks and leave them just at the fence line or to keep them from melting , put them on a bunch of large rocks in a container with a drain in the bottom ...answers 4:Well, first you don't give a Coggins shot. It's a blood test the vet has to do and only the vet can pull the blood.I like to do this at the first of the year so if I want to go to a show or trail ride I have that out of the way and it's good all year unless I wanted to sell my horse then it would only be good for 6 months. As far as the vaccinations, starting them at the first of the year as well....answers 5:I live in Maryland and I have heard they n! eed their coggins every 6 months but my vet said if I don't take my hor! ses anywhere and he isn't around any other horses I didn't need to get it; however, I do get all of his shots in the spring and fall. Coggins, rabies, west nile and a few others that the vet keeps track of because if I had to, I would be in the same boat with you, being bad about that stuff. So yes every 6 months for our state. Good luck! You should ask your vet if what are all the things that can keep your horse healthy because every horse is different. I will ask you this, does your horse have a mineral block? If not you should get one for him, that has a lot of vitamins horses need to keep healthy....answers 6:Coggins is a blood test to check for Equine Infectious Anemia which is almost always fatal in horses. For my horses that are not showing I give the basics in the spring, (either late March or early April) EWT with West Nile, Flu,and rabies vaccinations. For my show horse, when I plan on taking him out of state for a show I get a Coggins a month before any show (an! d don't have to do it again for a year) and he gets the basics in the spring along with PHF (Potomic Horse Fever) vaccination then in the fall he gets an intranasal strangles vaccination. Most of the time here where I live if I go to a show within the state I live in I don't have to have a Coggins done unless the show requires one. If I go out of state I make sure to have one because if I get pulled over and I don't have one I'm subject to a $1000 fine....answers 7:haha see I told you I was bad with this stuff I didnt even know coggins was blood work. I was in training for being my own vet for my horse but then I got confused with what was to be given at what time all I can remember is its spring or summer for wormers and thats about all I know that is to be given so as an added on question, could you tell me all a horse needs to recieve to be healthy!?!answers 8:I need to get more mineral blocks. I had some but the horses would knock them off of what I had them on and sto! mp on them for fun lolanswers 9:Sorry this is in american$. A coggins i! n many circumstances fees approximately 35$. in case you propose on moving your horse out of the self-discipline, u . s . a . or desirable right into a boarding facility you may desire to have that carried out. sturdy for a million year. sure, think approximately to get you horse vaccinated formerly than exhibiting and for same coggins motives. considering you will have never given vaccinations, i might desire to reccommend your vet doing it. they might even comprehend what you will have your horse get with what illnesses are for your self-discipline. additionally mutually with your vet doing the vaccinations, you will get a reproduction of what the horse offered if there became as quickly as a dispute. can no longer quite prove it for people who do it your self. sturdy success...answers 10:I do all of my vaccinations in the spring as well as a coggins
