Will Americans ever have free digital radio?

Craig Virani: Incorrect. "HD Radio" is being rolled out now on both AM and FM. FM's can have the main HD channel and up to 2 other channels with different formats.AM's have the main channel in better-than-FM quality...and it's free.

Elden Bardach: In America that would be HD Radio. The Monthly Fee would be satellite radio in which you can get in canada with XM/Sirius or Europe with Worldspace Satellite radio. Of couse they do offer a lot more than a digital radio can but digital radio is free :)

Tom Romer: There's HD radio in the States. You have to buy a special receiver, but it's free to get the signals

Ezekiel Kadner: Wow, do you ever listen to the radio? They have been advertising the crap out of free HD radio in the Ohio area. Nonstop. All this stuff about hidden channels between the channels with no monthly fee. Its out there, all you have to do is buy the receiver.

Guy Bonamico: America isnt real big on the "free" thing, I doubt they wil! l, at least not in my lifetime. Why would they switch? They are making $$ hand over fist w/ XM.

Melissa Lavallie: Wow.This just further demonstrates what a problem radio in the US has right now. HD radio has been a huge promotion for stations nationwide. HD receivers are available in the stores (but not selling well). When HD was set up, the geniuses made some big marketing errors that are too complicated to get into in this forum, but let's just say they made it as difficult as possible to use and become aware of - obviously, since you haven't heard of it. And that's not your fault, nor a criticism. If you'd like to see an HD receiver check your local Wal*Mart or Target.-a guy named duh...Show more
