Oscar Wieland: In regards to train travel, that's largely due to the automotive industry in the US which is quite powerful and lobbies against government funds for public transportation. The automotive industry also helped kill off streetcars in the US, that referred to as the "Great American streetcar scandal". The government will gladly hand billions to General Motors to make more SUV's, but apparently isn't interested in billions for decent public transportation, such as a high speed rail system. That said, part of the reason is also because a lot of Americans just don't seem interested in using public transit. There are exceptions though ... there seems to be a high demand for effective public transit in the Northeast, in California, and in several other major urban areas of the US; but elsewhere, there's just not much demand for it, especially in suburban cities where it can be faster to simply drive.I don't think it would be financially draining for there to be a mo! re effective public transportation system in the US, and if it was privatized, it would probably be the opposite of that. Amtrak is operated by the federal government. Most bus routes are operated by city and county governments, or other local ordinances that receive public funding.
